The results of the long disinterest in having geography taught in basic, as well as higher education, have taken their toll. Granted, the memorization of the names of states, capitals, rivers, seas and countries was not the way to teach history, but the general disinterest has left many students with little knowledge of even simple geographical facts. This reference will help teachers lead students back into the world of geography.

Written for use in high school courses but at a level understandable to middle school students, this two-volume set describes the fundamental concepts of basic physical and social geography. The essays are updates of selections from Salem Press's eight-volume World Geography (2001). The set's first volume contains 59 essays that deal with such topics as the Earth's interior and surface geological properties; climate; biological systems; natural resources; exploration and transportation; economic geography (agriculture, energy and engineering, industry, and trade); and political geography (government, geopolitics, and international boundaries). The second volume is largely occupied by the 230-page glossary explaining the meanings of geographic terms. Also included are appendices containing maps and basic geographic statistics.
